@sellanythingonline: David Jones is under cashflow pressure and is pushing back supplier payments another 20 weeks. What that means is that small businesses that have their products stocked in DJs won’t get paid for half a year more. They are going to really struggle with this and it’s not fair. I don’t care what anyone says but this economy is in a bad place and small businesses need to be protected. #davidjones #cashflow #businessstruggles #smallbusinesslessons #economy
Sorry if your stocked in David jones you are not a small business lol

Any business who agrees to this will go bankrupt - David Jones needs to focus on fixing the problem and increasing sales, not worsening terms which will inevitably be more damaging for them in the long run as the debt is only spread more thin… not removed.

DJs is taking a page straight out of the Saks / Neiman Marcus bankruptcy playbook 💀 Changing payment terms to 60 days AFTER things sell in-store, using "system updates" as an excuse, and using suppliers as interest-free loans while PE squeezes every last drop of cash… standard department store villain arc.

David Jones hasn’t been a darling business for some time… the moment Netaporter and Mr Porter (and others) started shipping to Australia, these guys were on the ropes. I love DJs and it impressed me beyond measure when I first visited Sydney in 2009 and I love the Sydney cafeteria and used to shop their butcher section back in the day, they are close to done. This isn’t them taking advantage of suppliers, it’s a sign of their corporate distress… another Fairfax story in the making, and Myer is right next to them…

I stopped shopping at DJs and Myer once you had to go to the specific counter for the specific brand. I walked out when I couldn’t pay for my make up and perfume together because they were different brands? What’s the point of the store then?

I can’t understand how DJs are still in business. I’ve been shopping there for decades and they just haven’t kept up. The stores are almost always empty - with exception of the city stores eg Brisbane city. They don’t invest in innovation or even the basics - eg all the perfume testers are empty or broken, not a sales assistant in sight… I feel it’s honestly on the suppliers to do their own research about the retailer, and they should take on the risk if they choose to go through somewhere like DJs. I don’t feel sorry for them.

Why are we shocked or surprised that a large corporation is good at doing business on their own terms?

So their bank would have a trade finance facility available that would give them access to 3-6months on top of supplier terms that covers stock and freight….I used to manage one. A supplier Terms change was definitely a telling choice in cashflow management.

David jones is going broke. The brands can withdraw from the store or reject the terms if they want to. But we’ll see the death of DJs

Maybe the “small businesses” should reconsider their awful return policies. Bec and bridge won’t let you return anything tried on in store because “you had a chance to try it on”
