Shorting the indices as a hedge is what all the pros do. Best way use put options. Your risk is then minimised to the value of option.

possibilities ≠ probabilities, so dont assume that risk reward ratio of infinity to 50%. Use proper take profit & stop loss and youll get somewhere. Additionally you dont short markets in general but instead you short individual companies.
