Our journey to this regenerative system has taken five years on our less than two acres. The first three years alone were mostly focused on removal of all the invasive plants before we could even BEGIN planting beneficial native plants (which is a big part of why I’m now so passionate about eradicating them from our landscapes). Half the property is a native food-focused forest, and the other half is a mix of plants meant to serve multiple purposes: food, herbal medicine, or ecosystem biodiversity. We finance this through the sales of cut flowers and lavender which fill the front yard. I try to focus on plants that require less water and maintenance and will someday fill in and reseed to create a beautiful meadow. We rely on living native ground cover grasses or natural organic matter from cover crops for walkways rather than plastic mulches, and swap out plastic nettings for jute or hemp to help minimize our plastic footprint. Our seed trays are constructed of upcycled wood or fiberglass meant to last decades and filled with soil blocks to avoid leaching microplastics into our soils. We still have a ways to go in figuring out better irrigation practices and involving our community in these efforts, which is a major goal of mine. But to wake up and see the life on this small plot of urban land compared to what it was before has made it all worth it.
