400 because its lighter and a teleconverter like the canon ef 1.6x mark iii telecomverter can make it 600 on full frame or 960 i think on crop without loosing any quality

Its really depends on the lens specs and what you spot. I hear its nikon which lucky for you thats what i shoot so tell me more

I would say 400 bc your camera already has some multiplier on it, and 600 may be to much

Since its a d3100 with no autofocus motor either one (I would personally go with 100-400 because it’s sharper and lighter) but the autofocus will be slow
