PS: 내 꼬마 친구 덕분에 매미에 대해 많이 알게 됐다. 특히 시끄러운 수매미까지! 😂 . . . Growing up Nigerian, children were deeply loved and cared for, but at least in my experience, we mostly learned to fit into the rhythm of the family. You ate what everyone ate, went where the adults went, and adjusted. 😂 Living in Korea with my own children, I noticed something different. In many families I encountered, family life seemed much more intentionally organized around the child—their schedules, education, meals, activities, and opportunities. Of course, neither Nigerians nor Koreans parent in one single way. These are simply patterns I noticed through the lens of my own upbringing while raising my children in another culture. But observation only tells you what you SEE. It doesn’t necessarily tell you WHY. So I asked one of my dear Korean friends about it. She explained that a child’s growing-up years are incredibly important and fleeting. You only get that season once, so while it’s here, many parents want to do as much as they can to love, support, and provide for their children. That stayed with me. And it made me think about a question I had never really considered: Should children fit into the life of the family, or should family life adjust around the children? Maybe good parenting lives somewhere in between.
