@animals.ofourplanet: Along the banks of the Nile and other African rivers lies one of the most fascinating stories about a possible relationship between a bird and one of the continent’s most dangerous predators. This is the Egyptian plover (Pluvianus aegyptius), a small bird that for centuries has been associated with the famous legend of crocodile “dentists.” According to ancient accounts, the Egyptian plover could approach a crocodile with its jaws completely open and remove food remains trapped between its teeth, gaining a meal while supposedly helping the reptile keep its mouth clean. The scene appears to represent a perfect cooperation between two completely different species. However, modern science has found no solid evidence that this behavior regularly occurs in the wild, so the story is still considered primarily a legend. What has been observed is that various birds can feed near crocodiles without being attacked, taking advantage of insects and small animals found around the water. For centuries, this close proximity may have inspired one of the most famous stories in the animal kingdom. A tiny bird facing enormous jaws. A story so extraordinary that we still wonder how much truth lies behind it.
