@nzherald: Two kiwi have been filmed kicking and battering each other in a rare wildlife encounter that experts say is a sign of conservation success. The footage, reportedly captured on predator-free Ulva Island, just off Stewart Island/Rakiura, shows two adult kiwi locked in a physical confrontation, striking each other with their powerful legs and claws. Ulva Island Ferry & Water-Taxi posted the video on social media, saying a guest sent it to them. Backyard Kiwi trustee Todd Hamilton, who has spent years working on kiwi recovery at Whangārei Heads, said the birds appeared to be fighting over territory or mating opportunities. “They’re pretty good at kicking. They’ve got big tough legs, big claws, and they can tag you, they can tag each other.” Hamilton said the birds were unlikely to seriously injure one another. “They’ll be sore, but it’s more like sparring rather than to the death,” he said. “Like a lot of animals, they’re fighting over territory and mates."
