it's was WW2 that opened the eyes of the colonies, Britain had touted themselves as powerful but they were exposed by the Germans, the colonies saw them on their knees but still sent troops to help them.

Compare British colonial legacy to Spain, Portugal, Netherlands and France. If British colonization was so terrible why are most former colonies doing so well? USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong (before Chinese takeover), India compared to Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Cuba, Honduras, Vietnam, Cambodia, Phillipines, etc. The difference is quite stark.
