Deer Ear Spools of the Lord of Sipán. My drawing 37/365 V4.0 👂 Today I’m bringing you a jewel that isn’t here to “look pretty”: it’s here to say who’s in charge. These are the deer ear spools from the funerary regalia of the Lord of Sipán. In Moche culture, wearing ear spools like these was like carrying a public office… but on your face. 🦌 They’re two almost twin discs, framed with tiny gold beads, and at the center, a deer built in a turquoise-blue mosaic. It’s not “a little drawing”: it’s an emblem. The deer is trapped in geometry, as if it had been turned into a seal. 📜 These ear spools are part of the assemblage found in the royal tombs of Sipán. In research shared by Smarthistory, it’s mentioned that among the burial objects there were ear spools made with figures (like these), as well as others with warriors and geometric designs. And this detail is key: the deer piece appears documented in photographic records as an “ear spool with a deer in turquoise and gold” found at Sipán. 📍 Today, this universe of pieces is preserved and displayed mainly at the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum in Lambayeque, Peru. 💡 Fun fact: Even though we call them “earrings,” these worked more like ceremonial ear plugs. Moche elites often had pierced and stretched earlobes, and the ear spool was inserted through the lobe as a two-part system: a highly visible front disc and a back piece that acted as a stopper so it wouldn’t fall. They didn’t “hang” like modern earrings, they stayed firm, installed, turning the ear into a display case. And socially, that makes sense: if the jewel doesn’t move, it reads better from a distance… like an official insignia attached to the body. 👂💠 See you tomorrow! 📸 Reference image: Ana María Rocha Puente – Pinterest. …………………………………………………
