A CCJ gives creditors legal enforcement options, and it’s recorded on the public register for six years. After six years, the judgment is removed from the public register, but the debt is not automatically cancelled. For some enforcement methods after six years, the creditor must return to court and ask the judge for permission to continue. The court considers why enforcement wasn’t done within the original six years. Simply saying there wasn’t enough time or that earlier attempts failed usually isn’t persuasive on its own. A stronger reason is normally required. For example, if the debtor left the country or was genuinely untraceable. In practice, many enforcement companies don’t pursue older CCJs, because going back to court costs time and money with no guarantee. For smaller debts, they often return the case to the creditor, who may then choose to write it off.

Contrary to common belief, unpaid High Court & County Court judgments (CCJs) do not always become unenforceable after six years. With proper legal procedures and court permission, creditors can successfully enforce judgment debts many years old.

Section 24 of the Limitation Act 1980 states that the judgement is only enforceable for 6 years. To extend the period for enforcement, they need to apply to a court to extend this prior to the expiry (which is almost never granted). This applies to consumer debt only, and generally for unsecured debts.

They will however struggle to get further enforcement as the judge will require a very good reason they haven't acted on it sooner
