I have clung to these words as a lifeline the past few weeks. Someone in my life, who was meant to protect me, betrayed my sister & I deeply. A relationship that I thought was one of the purest connections this world had to offer, was in fact built on lies. What was love from my side, was exploitation & manipulation from the other. One of two people i thought would want to see me succeed more than themselves is now years into an intentional battle to destroy my life & all I’ve worked towards. And for three years, it worked, I became an alcoholic, completely lost myself & nearly took my own life in the process. I felt utterly worthless, which was the intention. Three years ago though, my sister and I managed to escape, and despite the continued effort to entrap us once more, we’ve slowly untangled ourselves from the web we once found ourselves trapped in. This past year alone I’ve reconnected with my soul, I feel like I’ve shed this dead skin that was once suffocating me. Running the Carlsbad marathon this past weekend was the celebration of my commitment to take my life back- to fall back in love with who I am, reclaim all I’ve done & all I am. Each time I felt my body weaken, I kept repeating to myself, “Joy is an act of resistance.” On the later miles of my race, when it’s so easy to give in to the pain, to let your body succumb to the weakness, I stayed joyful. I laughed, danced, & cried all 26.2 miles, what an honor. Choosing joy in an otherwise dark time, when sorrow so easily calls, is a courageous act of optimism. To look out onto your life & intentionally see the good in all you’ve endured & all you will endure takes courage. Joy stands firmly between you & those that wish to see your demise. To be joyful is to be courageous. To choose joy in otherwise dark times is the highest form of strength. #mindset #selfgrowth #depression #positivity
