It’s been several years since I recorded and posted a video of this beautiful wasp species. But I was finally able to find and catch one again! This large sleek looking insect is what’s known as a Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus). These wasps are parasitoids of primarily katydid species, but will also parasitize grasshoppers as well. After mating, female Great Black Wasps fly out in the search of a katydid. Once a female has found one, she immediately stings it several times. The venom from her stings leaves the katydid completely paralyzed. The female will then drag her paralyzed prey back to her underground burrow that she dug out prior. Once underground, the female Great Black Wasp will lay a single egg on the body of the katydid. After hatching, the tiny wasp larva will begin to feed on the paralyzed katydid. The female will then fly out and gather several more katydids or grasshoppers to feed her larva. After the larva has acquired enough nutrients, the larva will pupate and will eventually emerge out of its underground burrow as an adult Great Black Wasp! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio!
