I’m seeing more and more people on here promoting ETF’s only but then when they share their portfolios, they too are invested in individual stocks 🤷🏻‍♀️🙃

The problem is there's just so few active managers that have proven they can consistently beat the market. I think of the likes of Terry Smith, Nick Train, the Baillie Gifford American fund... all once top fund managers/funds, but now been absolutely terrible for a while. To play devil's advocate, maybe it is just the case that, if enough people pick stocks, some people will get it right. They then get honoured as star managers, only for it to come crashing down in 5/10/15 years when whatever their "edge" was no longer seems to work. Most people on here who pick stocks seem to do it based on vibes and what they feel will do well, rather than having any good reason for it. Reading a few tweets on X and thinking the PE looks a bit low is not research. If you're investing in a large cap American company of any description, there is no way you have identified anything that the rest of the market hasn't. It makes more sense to me with the like of Michael (ShiftingShares), as he participates in a niche less covered section of the global market where it is more believable you could gain an edge through research. I say all this to engage in the discussion and share how I reach my conclusions, rather than arguing. I know you'll take it that way, but giving the caveat as I know some people can get wound up easily!

Mr David :
Terry Smith clever as he is could not beat SP500 these last five years. Plus he charges 1% but the index fund charges 0.07% 😳

I don’t want to pay a decent fund manager to manage my portfolio, I do believe they can beat the markets but the percentage it would cost makes it not worth it for me, plus my pensions are “managed” and almost certainly don’t do as well as my ISA, but I like most watching this are invested in both so well covered. All world remains the best option if you also have a pension. Obviously just my opinion, and most people will win in a bull market. 📈 Check back when it crashes (just before I retire 😂)

I've always doubted this statement. It just doesn't sound right. Also very few people are actually investing let alone trying to beat the market

I have no respect for creators who constantly spew videos that you can't beat the market. If you're a retail investor you are at a much higher advantage of beating the market than a institutional investor who have certain criteria they have to meet to keep clients happy.

Issue is there is a lot of nuance with fund management. There are different styles of management, fund structures and overall fund objectives which have a massive bearing on performance, let alone the fact that each fund will have its own benchmark that it uses for comparison purposes which in many cases won’t be the S&P. On pure performance, most active managers in the US Large Cap space will underperform the S&P. In other markets, like Asia EM, this isn’t the case.

There are other reports. AJBell “manager versus machine” and Morningstar Barometer. Over the short term, about 20% beat passives and over the long term it’s as low as 10%.
