Dear Professor Jason Arday,
I am truly sorry. I never knew you personally, yet I feel as though I have lost a sibling. My heart is broken by the way you were treated and by the loss of your life.
As a person of colour, it is shocking and frightening to see how much racism still exists in this country and across Europe. No matter how successful, educated, wealthy or skilled we become, there can still be institutions and systems that seek to bring us down.
Racism, systemic racism and institutional racism seem to be around every corner. It is incredibly difficult raising our children and teaching them that education, hard work and success will open doors, while knowing that those very doors do not always protect them from discrimination, prejudice or hatred.
We want our children to believe they can achieve anything, but we also have to prepare them for a world where being successful and being a person of colour can still come with painful and frightening challenges.
Professor Arday, I am so sorry. My heart is broken that your life and your work were taken away from you. You deserved better.
May you rest peacefully, and may your family find strength and comfort in knowing that your life and contribution mattered. 💔
