She came back four hours later. Winter was still on the couch. Karina opened the door quietly. "You didn't sleep?" Winter shook her head. Karina sat beside her, leaving a little space between them. "I'm sorry." "For what?" "For making you wait." "I would've waited anyway." "I know." Karina rubbed her hands together. "I think that's what scares me." Winter frowned. "What?" "You'll believe me no matter what I say." "Because you're my wife. Even if it's only through paper, what I felt for you was real." Karina looked down. "I trust you." "I don't deserve that right now." "Maybe." Karina's eyes filled with tears. Winter reached for her hand, and Karina let her. "I can wait," Winter whispered. "Don't." "Why?" "Because I might not come back." Winter's fingers tightened around hers. "Then I'll wait anyway." "Why would you do that?" Winter smiled faintly. "Because I love you." Karina looked away, tears slipping down her cheek. Winter wiped one away with her thumb. "You don't have to say it back." "Winter..." "It's okay." It wasn't. They both knew that. But Winter smiled anyway. Three days passed. Karina still came home. She still slept beside Winter. Still drank coffee from the same mug. Still asked what they were having for dinner. It almost felt normal. Almost. Then, on the fourth night, Karina didn't come home. Winter stayed on the couch until the clock passed two. At 2:36 a.m., the front door finally opened. Karina stepped inside and stopped when she saw Winter. "You're still awake." "I was waiting." Karina looked down. "I see." She put her bag beside the door and sat on the couch. Winter looked at her for a while. "Are you going to tell me now?" Karina rubbed her hands together. "Yes." Winter waited. "There is someone else." Winter's eyes lowered. "How long?" "A few months." "Do you love him?" Karina took a breath. "I think I do." Winter nodded slowly. It hurt hearing it out loud, but somehow, it was easier than all the guessing. "Are you leaving now?" Karina looked at her. "I think I should." Winter swallowed. "You've already decided." Karina nodded. "I have." There was a long silence. Winter looked around their apartment. The coffee table they bought together. The framed picture hanging above the television. Karina's blanket folded neatly over the armrest. All those little things suddenly looked different. "Are you going to take your things?" "Tomorrow." Winter nodded. "Okay." Karina looked at her. "That's it?" "What do you want me to say?" "I don't know." Winter gave a small smile. "You've made your choice." Karina's eyes became wet. "I'm sorry." "I know." "I never wanted to hurt you." "I know that too." Karina looked down at her hands. "Winter..." "Hm?" "I really did love you." Winter's smile faded a little. "I know." "And some part of me probably always will." Winter looked at her. "Then maybe that's enough." Karina frowned. "Enough for what?" "For me to know that what we had was real." Karina wiped her cheek. Winter reached over and held her hand. Karina looked at their fingers. They stayed like that for a while. No more promises will come true now, or even asking her to stay longer. Just their hands together for what might be the last time. Eventually, Karina pulled her hand away. "I should sleep." "Yeah we should..." Karina stood and walked toward the bedroom. Winter stayed on the couch. Before closing the door, Karina looked back. "Goodnight." Winter looked at her. "Goodnight, Karina." The door closed. Winter sat there for a while, listening to the quiet apartment. Tomorrow, Karina would pack her things. And this time, Winter knew she wouldn't beg her to stay. Because she had spent enough time believing that love meant holding on. Maybe sometimes, it meant knowing when to let someone go. She leaned back against the couch and looked toward the closed bedroom door. For the first time in weeks, she didn't wait for it to open again. #winrina #winter #karina #jmj #winrinaau
