Hi! Japanese here who used to work at a department store in Japan 🙋🏻♀️First of all, I’m sorry you had bit a scary experience in a foreign country. That must have been really confusing and frightening! If only the upper floors were still open, I’m guessing this happened sometime after around 7:30 p.m.? In Japanese department stores, the upper floors are usually where the restaurants are, and they tend to stay open later than the other floors. They also sometimes open a little later in the morning, around 11 a.m., for example. So if you ever find yourself in a situation like this again, don’t worry! just head to one of the floors that is still open. Japanese department stores are especially known for the idea that “the customer is god” (meaning that customers are treated with great care and respect). Before closing, staff always make sure there are no customers left inside. Even if you happen to be the very last customer, a staff member will guide you to the exit. So please don’t worry they won’t just lock you inside! ☺️

Just walk down... The escalator is pretty slow, you can just walk against the direction and you will still get down. I can't believe you went up that's ridiculous
