Four biblical truths about forgiveness every Christian should know. If you think forgiving someone means you must continue a relationship with them, please listen carefully until the end. Many Christians suffer for years because they misunderstand this. The Lord Jesus truly commanded us to forgive, but He never told us to keep people who hurt us close to our lives. First, forgiveness does not mean immediate reconciliation. Forgiveness frees your heart from bitterness. But reconciliation requires both sides to work together, trust to be rebuilt, and the other person to truly change. Some relationships can be restored. Some relationships require distance. That does not mean you have not forgiven. Second, blessing your enemies does not mean staying close to them. Luke 6:28 says: “Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” — Luke 6:28 KJV You can bless them from a distance. You can sincerely pray for them to repent and be saved. But that does not mean you must keep allowing them to hurt you. Third, loving people does not mean trusting everyone. Matthew 10:16 says: “Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” — Matthew 10:16 KJV Kindness is not naivety. Grace is not gullibility. A spiritually mature person has both love and discernment. Fourth, forgiveness does not mean pretending nothing happened. Matthew 18:15 says: “Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault...” — Matthew 18:15 KJV The Gospel does not shape people who have no principles and allow others to control or hurt them. It shapes people who know how to forgive, but do not tolerate sin. They pursue peace without sacrificing truth. They show mercy, but still walk with wisdom and discernment.
