this is the kind of stepmother everyone hates. she has no empathy and grace for the children. she could have helped but she hates every one of his kids. why does she want to join this family ?

Jeez, why did I think older kids meant less problems? It seems no matter the age, there’s issues 😭

All is fine but "adult kids" and school can't be in the same sentence. they maybe look adult but those are kids still developing.

young adults are not fully developed emotionally or mentally, and saying that they've turned out poorly is short-sighted - literally, in the fact that in 5-10 years, their behavior could be totally different. I'm not saying that boundaries aren't important, and asking young adults to either be in school or have a job is totally reasonable, but I have questions about how OP behaved, how her fiance behaved, and how everything here went down

wow this is crazy I don't care how "functional" an adult child is, it's still his kids and the lack of success is not "disrespect" it's fine to not financially support them beyond food and shelter but those are things you should be able to fall back on parents for when you go through time where you can't be " high functioning" we don't know anything about these kids they may be going through stuff and regardless it's fine to set boundaries like a timeframe stating exactly how long you can let them live there, but unless that expect is put forward it's not fair to blame them them not knowing how long they have to be there and I can't imagine choosing a partner over my kids not ever

So I think you’re entitled to How the kind of home that you want. But I also think that a good parent doesn’t walk away from their children figuratively or literally. When you talk about “adult children 18 to 22 probably? Those of us who have kids this age know that they are not done developing emotionally or cognitively. This actually doesn’t happen until they’re mid to late 20s. That doesn’t mean that they get a pass to do whatever they want, but a good parent supports them, puts expectations on them, enforces, roles, etc. These don’t sound like terrible kids. But he sounds like he’s not a good father. And in fact, him choosing you over them is just more evidence that he’s not a good father. He’s dumping the responsibility of parenting in your lap and abandoning them. At best, you two are not aligned. And that worst he’s a weak man who can’t stand up to you or his kids.

Even my biological mother had that rule after I graduated high school. If I didn't go to school, I had to get a job and help out.

I like this advice, however I think we are miss commenting on a new trend in our society of couples coming together not being married and the expectation of one partner is that they perform matrimonial duties without being married this is insane. Why go through all of this if you are not married, nip this in the bud calibrate things or MoveOn you are wasting your time just my two cents.

It sounds like a case of “I married him, not his kids” AND “I know exactly how to parent” without being a parent. They are clearly not compatible. If you marry someone with kids, kids are part of the package.

This sounds like my life after I married my husband. I have no kids and thought it would be nice to have his kids to bond with and enjoy. That DID NOT HAPPEN. One of his daughters had a 2 year old that we ended up with almost every day. I loved her but this was not what I signed up for. Then they moved into our basement and it really went downhill hill from there. I ended up

for me the paying rent thing should have been discussed. you go to school fine you don't pay rent but if you quit you work and contribute or live elsewhere. I don't see that they had conversations about this maybe that just wasn't submitted.
