The Franklin Expedition: 129 Men Who Never Came Home In 1845, British explorer Sir John Franklin led two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, into the Canadian Arctic in search of the Northwest Passage. There were 129 men aboard. Both ships became trapped in sea ice near King William Island. Months turned into years.
