Maybe if the police were more reliable, there wouldn't be so many people wanting to help them despite "not being qualified". I would bet my last dollar that these people know exactly what can happen to them if things go south during an altercation with violent people. And I would bet that same last dollar that they are willing to take the chance of getting hurt just so that they can make some small amount of difference for a community that is genuinely struggling. If the police really care that much about our safety, they can respond faster to 911 calls and stop moving the homeless from one location to another. People are becoming vigilantes because they see work that the police are not doing. They see things go from loud argument to murder faster than any emergency responder can respond to. I myself have witnessed more than one murder on the streets, and it wasn't first responders who responded first to try to save the victims lives or to try to apprehend the murderer so that police could arrest them. If you dont want vigilantes, don't make room for them. Don't just wait for crime to happen. Don't just sit around and do nothing while people sleep on the street. Be somebody the community actually respects. Show us you are care by showing up with water and Narcan, and heck in on the homeless instead of waiting for them to do crime. These vigilantes are trying to do good for their community and all anybody can think of is "but do they have a license". People who say shit like that sound like the kind of people who would tell cops to shut down a child's lemonade stand because they don't have a license to sell. If you need a license to be a good person, there is something seriously wrong with society. These people are doing good. Until they become the primary suspect of a REAL crime, not simply operating without a license, I don't want to hear anybody saying anything bad about them. Because since when has it ever been ok to treat somebody like a criminal before they break the law?
