Crucifixion caused severe dehydration, and Jesus had just said: “I thirst.” — John 19:28 John also says this happened “to fulfill the Scripture.” This is commonly connected with Psalm 69:21: “For my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” Finally, the passage is describing sour wine rather than poison. It was a cheap, acidic wine associated with ordinary people and Roman soldiers. In many older English Bible translations it is called “vinegar,” while modern translations often say “sour wine.”
