I’ve spent the last few years travelling around the world to study and investigate linguicide and language loss - and it’s a journey that unsurprisingly took me to the United States. As a Brit (of course with our own awful history of linguicide, intimately tied to the US’) I had never seen maps like this of language diversity in North America and today’s United States in particular - if they’re new to you, too, then I hope they can begin a journey of curiosity about the language history you might never have been taught about in this part of the world. Communities have, for generations, been working to restore their languages. At the end of the Biden administration, the 10 year National Plan on Native Language Revitalization asked for major federal investment to expand immersion schools and train teachers - a transformational $16.7bn investment. But without the ongoing backing to make the plan come to life - regardless of who is running the country - it risks staying just a document. How many languages will disappear while their speakers and would-be speakers wait? Other initiatives and pre-existing federal grant programmes squeeze in to try and make up for it, and communities remain resourceful - as they’ve always been forced to do to get the job done. In How To Kill A Language, I paid a visit to some very inspiring language activists and linguists in California. The US version of my book is out July 7.
