Orca Slams Its Head Against the Glass in a Chinese Aquarium Orcas in Captivity – Three Disturbing Cases A visitor recently filmed an orca at Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China, inside the “Universe Spaceship” aquarium. The footage shows the orca repeatedly slamming its head forcefully against the glass of its enclosure. According to the original post, this does not appear to be an isolated incident. Similar behavior has reportedly been observed and documented there several times since 2024. Many people see this behavior as a possible sign of stress and suffering in captivity. Hugo – Miami Seaquarium Hugo was captured off Washington in 1968 and held at the Miami Seaquarium. During his captivity, he repeatedly struck his head against the walls and glass of his enclosure. On March 4, 1980, he died at around 15 years of age from a cerebral aneurysm. A direct medical link between the head strikes and the aneurysm has not been conclusively documented. Kiska – Marineland Canada Kiska was captured off Iceland in 1979 and lived for decades at Marineland Canada. Since 2011, she had no other orcas as companions. Footage showed her repeatedly striking her head against the glass wall of her enclosure. Kiska died in 2023. Three cases, one disturbing pattern: Orcas are highly intelligent and social marine mammals. Repeated head-striking can be an indication of significant stress and distress in captivity. The private initiative Save the Ocean calls for continued efforts against such facilities and for an end to keeping orcas in captivity.
