@sowtexasgarden: Your fall seedlings may be ready. But if Central Texas is sitting in triple digits, I’m not rushing them into the garden just because the calendar says it’s time. 🌱 When I say “wait for the heat to break,” I don’t mean wait until it feels like fall. I’m looking for a better transplanting window: ☀️ A stretch without extreme triple-digit heat 🌤️ A slightly cooler or cloudier day if I can get one 🌅 Transplanting later in the day rather than during peak afternoon heat 💧 Soil that is well-watered before and after planting And if those seedlings have been growing inside, they still need to be hardened off gradually before going straight into the Texas garden. While I’m waiting, I keep them growing in their containers, keep them watered and give them enough light. The goal isn’t to delay fall planting for weeks. It’s to avoid taking a healthy seedling and putting it through unnecessary stress on one of the hottest days of the year. Because the planting calendar is a guide. The weather still gets a vote.
