my dad died of oesophageal cancer in 1991. probably part of the reason I became a mature student nurse and completed my nurse training in 2005. Mr smith sounds like one of the good guys ❤️

He was the surgeon that performed my dad’s operation to make a new opening to his stomach due to an ulcer. After the surgery my wee daddy was a new man was able to eat normal food instead of mostly liquid diet. Attended a few appointments with my dad and yes he was such a lovely man. RIP Mr Smith 🙏🏻

I love him ❤️I’ve got stage 4 breast cancer in the mediastinal lymph nodes, recently had progression and not been able to have even puréed food for six weeks, I so want fried bread, fried bread, baked beans and brown sauce. You had such a dab mentor who made folk feel ‘ normal ❤️

Have genuinely heard tales of this man. Between him, Graham Teasdale and many more, our country’s a medical legend factory (I know Mr Teasdale wasn’t born in Scotland, but he chose to live here and that makes him a Scot as much as anyone in my opinion). Thanks, WoS disease!

I worked with a surgeon who would bring cancer patients in who had no family a few days before Xmas so come Xmas day they’d had their surgery and where recovered enough to enjoy Xmas day with each other and the ward staff and he’d put money in a kitty so the sister would get presents for them.

What a really thoughtful and kind thing to do for his patients to make sure they got a good Christmas. You don't get folk like that often, you're right. What a legend.

My mum had oesophageal cancer. She had to have an oesophagectomy. She was never the same. Bless Mr Smith I really hope if there is a heaven he’s reaping the greatest rewards there!
