A single piece of this lead packs around 400 million nanodiamond particles, and a pack of 40 holds about 16 billion. Colored leads are much harder to make than black ones. Black leads are graphite and clay fired at high heat, which makes them hard and erasable, but colored leads can't be fired because the pigment would burn off, so they're mostly wax, making them soft, fragile, and hard to erase. Packing that into 0.5 and 0.7mm mechanical pencil leads was basically impractical. So Mitsubishi rebuilt the process from the ground up, packing in around 400 million nanodiamonds per lead for density and smoothness. For the first time a colored mechanical pencil lead could be used just like a normal pencil, turning colored pencils from an underlining tool into a proper writing tool. And it doesn't break the bank, since non-gem diamonds cost about a dollar a gram.
