The idea that the state pension will not exist / be virtually nonexistent has an element of fearmongering to it though. When a majority of the population (53%) have less than €3000 in savings, having no state pension would cause actual anarchy. You mention the worker to retiree ratio, but what about where you're situated now? Spain is in a far more precarious situation in terms of its demographics, and only 15% of people there contribute to a private pension, the rest entirely rely on their state pension. Unless the pension system collectively collapses across Europe, it isn't likely that it only ceases to exist in Ireland specifically. That's not to say the current system is sustainable, you're absolutely right that it's important to contribute to an occupational scheme if you have the means, but I think insinuating that the state pension will collapse as a whole doesn't take everything into account.

most of the people fearmongering about no state pension are "financial advisers " who make their living from convincing people to invest in private pensions. if climate change is a thing then more people will migrate to cooler wetter Ireland. Worldwide the population will fall but not in Ireland

And yet there’s my mother in law who never paid a single penny towards her own pension contributions or the pensioners of her time now getting a full state pension after never ever working a day in her life. And she’s giving me pension advice!

The reality is that the country will be completely destroyed when you are 66 if it stays on its downward trajectory that it’s on right now. If crime/costs/lack of basic services etc stays going up the way it’s going up now you won’t want to be here anyway so what difference will it make.

simple solution stop giving taxes to people and countries that have nothing to do with are country also if you are in this country and have a prsi number the government have a record of when you worked how long you've worked so it's easy if you have never paid in you should not be paid out or if you only paid in a small amount you only get a small amount unless of course you have some sort of genuine reason that you couldn't work not a bullshit excuse its an easy fix so you only get out what you put in

I imagine it’s hard hearing this as a young person and hard for people in their 30s and 40s ( I am in my mid 30s) we are told that you go to school to get into college to get a job to get a house and work ( pay your taxes and prsi) until 65 and you have your state pension waiting for you but now we’re being told we are gonna be struggling forever…

Get rid of the social welfare payments for people that want to sit on their arse and then they wouldn't have to worry about giving state pension , i'm hoping to retire in nine years and I've paid my way in working i deserve my state pension
