Why Too Much Freedom Too Soon is a Problem! When a dog is given too much freedom before their recall is solid, they often run off to explore, chase, or play. Every time this happens, the behaviour is being reinforced. The dog learns that ignoring the recall cue leads to fun and adventure, which makes it harder to get them to come back in the future. Start Small and Build Up The key is to set your dog up for success by starting in controlled environments and gradually increasing the challenge. Begin in a quiet space: Practice recall indoors or in a fenced yard where distractions are minimal. Use a long line: A long training lead gives your dog some freedom while still allowing you to maintain control. Reward generously: Every time your dog comes back, make it worth their while with treats, praise, or play. Increase distance slowly: Once your dog is consistent at short distances, gradually add more space.
