When a woman does the same, the read is that something is going on with her. She seems off. She has been short lately. And "difficult" starts appearing in conversations she will never be in. So she takes on a second job: keeping the numbers steady while managing everyone's read on her mood. Here is what that looks like: 1️⃣ Her output hasn't moved, but she has stopped starting anything new because initiative is the first thing to go and the last thing measured. 2️⃣ She is doing the real work at night because the day gets eaten by everything that happens in front of others. 3️⃣ She adds warmth to emails on purpose because the plain version reads as cold coming from her. 4️⃣ She only speaks in meetings when asked directly. 5️⃣ She is still doing the notes, onboarding, and leaving card because declining takes more energy than doing it. 6️⃣ She answers with a straight yes or no and stopped explaining her reasoning, which leadership files as an attitude problem. 7️⃣ She no longer corrects the record when someone else gets credit for her work. 8️⃣ Her camera is off more often and everyone assumes it's a preference. 9️⃣ She books leave and then cancels it, or takes it and works through it anyway. 🔟 Every answer to "how are you?" is now "busy," because it's the only acceptable answer. None of that is a personality change. It's what happens when you have to perform being fine while still inside what you're recovering from. The part that costs you is number six. When you stop softening, people register it as a change in you rather than your capacity.
