The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement argues that the most compassionate and moral thing that humanity can do is to stop having children and let ourselves go extinct. They even have a motto, 'May we live long and die out.' The movement was started in 1991 by Les Knight, and it says that if you look at what humanity has done to the planet - the mass deforestation, the extinctions, and all of the plastic in the oceans - then you have to reach the uncomfortable but logical conclusion that the Earth is much better off without us. The problem is with human beings and our voracious, exploitative, brutalising human nature. Every human being, no matter how carefully they tread, consumes resources, displaces other species, and accelerates ecological damage simply by existing. Knight's proposal is not violent or forced, but rather the voluntary decision to stop reproducing in the hope that humanity will dwindle away. It might be argued that this is against every biological instinct we have. Our genes want to carry on. Humans want to survive. And yet, Knight says, this is more to the point. It shows that reproduction is not a rational choice. It is a biological compulsion. It is an irrational trap. The problem is that every generation thinks that they can do better. They say, 'I can fix this.' And yet every generation fails. Things get worse, the damage accumulates. And Knight says that the problem is not with any one individual human being, or any one society, or any one generation. The problem is human nature. And so if the world is to be better off, if we are to do the best thing, we should go extinct.
