@rene.etc: Singapore prides itself on being a multicultural society. But multiculturalism/ multiracial isn’t just about different cultures/ races existing in the same space. It’s about having enough awareness to make sure the person beside you doesn’t feel excluded because of the language you’ve chosen to speak. What are your thoughts? 💭 #singapore #inclusivity #multiracial
In the past, can just say “Channel 5 please” but these days no one watches free to air tv. 😁😁😁 I usually just call out this behaviour. If they apologise, I give them the benefit of the doubt. If they justify themselves, I don’t waste my breath with them anymore.

i try to beat them at their own game by picking up some mandarin words here and there. when they speak mandarin only andni kinda understand what they are talking about i will just chime in in english. they then auto speak english throughout.

I’ve also worked in Malay-majority organisation and sometimes the Malays get carried away talking in Malay language forgetting there are non-Malays in the group. Not a specific race phenomenon actually :)

Happened to me in my previous company when I was the only muslim at the table. They’ll discuss about work, projects etc during lunch in full mandarin and wouldn’t bother translating. Mind you, they’re all singaporean chinese, well educated. It’s not hurtful because i get to tune off. But the exclusion from knowing things that are happening starts to make you feel lost?

When I was an educator, I had to attend meetings and my ex colleagues would ramble on in Chinese. It was a meeting for goodness sake.

As a Singaporean Chinese I absolutely hate it when some of my colleagues do this to other races.. one of my ex managers did this in front of our HoD who is Indonesian. Damn rude.. And you get outcasted for “thinking differently” while they continue staying in their clique speaking mandarin.

Same for me but in reverse. The whole office speaks in malay and half of them are Chinese, and I'm the only Chinese who doesn't understand. I just brush it off because they prob don't want me to know what they're saying

usually telling them firmly I DON'T UNDERSTAND will make them switch to English. but in group settings it def is tougher, especially among people who assume their language is the dominant one. some do this on purpose. no point telling them to be nicer and more inclusive because they want to exclude you.

Truth be told, it’s normal. People don’t really give a damn these days. Maybe some would be considerate but not all. Even if you insist they speak English so you could understand, may spark an argument. Let it be. As long you still understand what the conversation is about and what to do next regards to your work, that’s all that matters.

Totally agree. Also, it needs to go both ways with anyone. I can understand if certain topics are harder to explain in a non-native language / mother tongue, but if there more than 2 person in that conversation there wouldn't be any issues to discuss and find an explanation from another person. In my experience, I am blessed to have friends who taught me what considerations looks like and that definitely makes another person to be more empathetic towards others. This is a good awareness to everyone and I applaud you for the shoutout. I hope people who come across this post could see what it looks like in another person's shoe 🫶🏻✨

Happened to me but the joke was I learned Chinese in primary school. Some of my colleague knew I spoke Chinese. During lunch this other colleague who I hardly spoke with started speaking in Chinese. I noticed she kept smirking at me so I thought she wanted to be friendly with me. When we were finishing up I decided to chip in something to the convo then she looked shocked at me and said “wow u can speak Chinese?!” At this point I was flabbergasted cause I thought she knew I could speak it since she was smiling at me here and there during the whole lunch while speaking in Chinese. This made me realise she was not a good person she probably did that to make me feel uncomfortable

These people are definitely tone-deaf and regardless if these are Singaporeans or fellow SEAblings/Chinese immigrants who came to SG for a better career, everyone regardless of race or religion should be sensitive to people around them. I grew up in an English environment but when I am in a team of mandarin speakers, I would be the ones translating for the non-mandarin speakers - however I noticed not many people do the same, and increasingly among foreigners. I do hope people practice inclusivity too 😭
