I think he cut the wrist to make it seem like she was suicidal. as bread crums. he did what he did... then though she was a goner. then he went to do that to the kids, not knowing that she had survived and she was by the window because she tried to escape by the window. and he had to try to "save her life" because she had already been seen by neighbors.

She was a nurse, so if the intention was suicide, why would she cut her wrists horizontally rather than vertically? That detail, to me, doesn’t make sense and raises questions about whether the injuries were actually self-inflicted.
