@movieluts: I love this parallel because these two shots are both so similar and so different. Both use the technique of a lateral tracking shot. In Up, the camera movement is very objective and isn’t motivated by character movement. Instead, it brilliantly uses the movement from left to right to reveal the sad news and show the passage of time. While in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the camera follows the character’s movement and creatively uses the colorful wall at the entrance to symbolize his creativity, before switching to cold, gray colors as soon as he steps into work, reflecting his dull work life.

@Movie LUTs I love how I’ve heard people say that they deliberately made the fourth Matrix movie a piece of garbage because there was no way to honestly make something good after everything that came before. Whenever I rewatch The Secret Life of Walter Mitty after hearing that, I think about how they used a subtly clever reference to the red pill and the blue pill to definitively establish what Walter’s central point would be, and what sequence of events would make him a depressed man trapped inside himself, versus the kind of dreamy adventurer who is free to move through the world and finally ready to understand what he had been missing all along. I mean, part of what the original Matrix story is about is exactly that: opening your eyes, seeing what lies ahead, and choosing because of it. But Ben Stiller managed to do something like that in a movie that doesn’t even operate in the same vibe or use the same tropes, while Warner couldn’t make something even remotely fun to watch the way they did in the past. They underestimate us way too much.

In a psychology sense, you can also reverse these colors. Where the bright colors could mean grief, and the dark Gray colors could be happy and loving. It's called reverse psychology.
