@derekgchan: Different lineages and schools will have their own explanation of the purpose of the techniques. However, this can sometimes be due to misunderstanding or mistranslation of the names of the techniques. For example, Taan Sau, in literal translation, is “flat hand.” It can simply be a guidance or cue for learners to understand that the hand should be flat. However, throughout the years, I’ve heard explanations ranging from “Beggar’s Hand” to even “Devil’s Hand,” where you are supposedly asking demons to assist you. Which is why, when I teach my students, I focus more on the primary objective of the technique rather than focusing too much on the name.
