Dogs like Kevin are the actual reason why I think so many of us who love animals have that ultimate dream of owning a piece of property that could be a safe haven for dogs who have literally never been shown a second of kindness. He didn’t have a name, so I’m naming him Kevin. He came into the shelter as an owner surrender in the field, meaning his owners agreed to surrender him to animal control. Sometimes animal control can work with an owner to get an animal surrendered rather than leaving them in a bad situation. Kevin is skinny, covered in fleas (has been treated at the shelter already) and low heartworm positive. He shakes uncontrollably and there were moments when I would move my hand and he would immediately squint and brace himself. He constantly looked like he was waiting for me to do something horrible to him. Fostering a dog like Kevin can be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. I already know there is a completely different dog underneath all of this fear. He just needs the chance to become him. Please remember that if you adopt or foster a dog like Kevin, you aren’t just signing up for the scared dog you see today. There may come a day when he feels safe enough to be wild and playful. He might chew things. He might not be potty trained. He might have absolutely no idea how to live inside a home. He has likely never had the structure and consistency we expect our pets to understand. He doesn’t know how to be someone’s pet yet. Someone has to be willing to teach him. •A2094191 •Male •Heartworm positive (treatable) •good with cats? not sure •pledges are not physical money they are a promise to donate to a 501c3 nonprofit organizations if they intake the pet, not individuals. 📌 Please contact BARC if you are local and can help! Neither BARC nor I can assist out of state adoption or foster offers.
