I feel so sad, honestly. Stage 4 cancer is such a devastating reality because, by that point, the cancer has usually spread to other parts of the body, making treatment much more complicated. It doesn’t necessarily mean that nothing can be done, because depending on the type of cancer and how far it has spread, there may still be treatments that can control the disease, relieve symptoms, improve quality of life and extend the patient’s life. But one of the most painful parts is that the patient has to be strong and stable enough to tolerate whatever treatment is being considered. Doctors have to assess the patient’s overall condition before proceeding with treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. Sometimes, even when everyone desperately wants treatment to begin, the patient’s condition may be too fragile for the treatment to be given safely. And this is where it becomes especially heartbreaking. When treatment has to be delayed because a patient is too weak or medically unstable, the cancer may continue to progress during that period. Depending on the type and aggressiveness of the cancer, it can spread further to other parts of the body, and by the time the patient becomes strong enough for treatment, the disease may have progressed to a point where treatment becomes even more difficult or less effective. That waiting period can therefore be incredibly frightening. I understand this pain on a very personal level because I lost my mum to cancer. She was supposed to undergo radiotherapy, but each time we took her to the hospital, we were told that she wasn’t fit enough for the treatment. Watching someone you love desperately need treatment while being told that their body isn’t strong enough to receive it was one of the hardest experiences of my life. Honestly, it was hell. Cancer and the suffering that can come with it can be so overwhelming that I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone not even an enemy. If you stood beside someone you hated and watched them go through that kind of suffering, I honestly believe your heart would soften and you would find forgiveness.
