Lots of fabulous gingers in Southern Italy especially Sicily because they descend from Normans who extensively reigned there. Then you have gingers in Northern Italy and it is very likely that their genes come from the Celts who settled in Lombardy and Veneto loooong time ago.

Actually it makes sense! (ginger Italian here) it’s a gene that mainly comes from the Etruscan people who used to inhabit northern/central Italy! Not all of us are the sunshine-seaside-tan brand!
