What does depression actually look like? When I ask students this question, I hear words like sadness, pain, overthinking and isolation. And those answers make sense. But the problem is, we can start to believe that somebody who is struggling will always look like they’re struggling. They won’t. Someone can be confident, funny, sociable and seem completely fine to everybody around them while dealing with something very different internally. That’s one of the biggest things I want young people to understand when I speak in schools. You can’t always see what somebody is carrying. So don’t wait until someone “looks depressed” before you check in. Ask the question anyway.
