We are in Israel now, and we were invited to see the Special Collections Reading Room of the National Library of Israel. We talked about the history of the Library, and Alexandr Gordin showed us several objects: two facsimiles and a peculiar 18th century manuscript. Here's a facsimile of an Ashkenazi manuscript Worms Mahzor. One of the new things we learned is about the process of writing these Jewish manuscripts. It wasn't news to us that often writing and illumination were done by different people. But we didn't know that vowel marks were often placed by a third scribe! Hebrew is one of the languages where only the consonants have letters and have to be written down. But for some more important texts, vowels are marked with special symbols.
