the spiral and the silence have a relationship i did not understand until i was inside both of them at 3am with nowhere to go. silence does not just permit the spiral. silence is what the spiral has been waiting for all day, the condition it cannot thrive without, the thing it needs the way a fire needs oxygen. and all day there had been noise. the baby and the feeds and the visitors and the well-meaning questions and the texts to respond to and the hundred small sounds of a life that is still technically happening even when it feels like it is happening to someone else. and the spiral had been patient through all of that noise because it knew. it knew that eventually the house would go quiet and the baby would not be sleeping and the particular 3am silence would arrive and then it would have everything it needed to do what it does. and what it does is take the small true things and make them large. not false. that is the cruelest part. the spiral does not lie to you. it takes real things, real fears, real uncertainties, real questions you do not have answers to yet, and it amplifies them inside the silence until they fill the room. and a room full of amplified real things at 3am is very hard to argue with because the things are real and you know they are real and the silence keeps giving the spiral more oxygen. and then the dots. and the dots broke the silence. not with noise. with presence. and presence is the one thing that takes the oxygen away. the spiral needs you alone in the silence to do what it does. you were not alone. you never were. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momtok #momlife
