Love this! I’ve rewatched two times and I have to say…I’m a Dawson sympathizer AND for the exact reasons you mentioned! He is the protagonist of a story that KEEPS DEMANDING that he be a hero. Thank good James played the character for who he was instead of who the writers wanted him to be. Dawson is a particularly mean, spoiled jerk. And why can’t he be!? Let him be a jerk, the world NEEDS jerks lol

Well you also need to understand that it was a prime time show in the WB. They needed conflict to keep it going. Thus all the breakups and changes in the characters. Pacey acts out of character at the end of season 4 and season 5… and someone please explain to me why on earth did they kill Jen!

Dawson was a self-insert for creator Kevin Williamson but once he left after season one the show was mostly written by women and they rightly made Joey and Pacey the centre of the show. To me Joey was always the main character and Pacey was the only choose for her

I am the same age as the characters and was such a great lesson as a teen that maybe you should consider that you are not the main character, maybe you are an annoying, pretentious little shit. 😂 I did not know this about the writers room! I tried watching it on streaming and the wrong intro song really ruined it for me, might have to track down some old dvds.

Joey and Pacey's breakup made some sense - a lot of couples break up or redefine things at high school graduation. but how he broke up with her was such a character assassination that went against everything we knew about him and his feelings for Joey.

There was no social media feedback for the writers and yet they made the titular character the third lead in his own tv show by the end. Joey was the protagonist. Pacey was the love interest. Dawson was merely foil.
