Good friends tell the truth even though you don't want to hear it.

For $2.5 million I’d be anything that man wanted me to be. I think NTA, especially if he lives with his family. Wait till you have your money and then you have the ability to move out and be your own person. Does it suck? Yea, but even taking the money away, don’t do it until you’re able to live on your own or have someone you can stay with indefinitely

It sounds like sam has hit that point where staying in the closet feels worse than anything that could happen by coming out. Looking at it from a financial perspective of course the money seems like the better option. But its a hard thing to explain to cis people, that feeling of the closet slowly killing you, and being unable to imagine any type of future because you actually just can’t picture the person you are right now getting older. Yes the money could help fund a future transition, but youve got to still be here for that to happen. And to be getting 5am calls, it seems like sam is really struggling at

This sucks for Sam BUT I would really HATE to be on the listening end of him lamenting about NOT getting the money for the rest of their lives 😩😩

NTA if grandparent is knocking on deaths door I’d hold out as long as necessary to make sure my future was financially secure then they can have a big as coming out party and be who they want to be openly

There was an update 2 years later. OP cut contact with Sam after a series of fights after the initial blow up and ran into Sam 2 years later at a coffee shop looking rough. Basically Sam came out and exactly what OP warned about happened. Sam lost more and more friends in a series of couch surfing and had a hard time keeping a job and while catching up blew up on OP and not having more sympathy for "abandoning him"

Sounds like Sam just needs an ear and a shoulder right now. NTA, I agree with you, but I would definitely let Sam know you are there for him to lean on while working through this.

NTA. But you need to have a talk with Sam to find out what's happened to push him to do this. something isn't okay.

May this type of friend never find me. If I had a friend who was on the verge of throwing $2.5m away, I think I might deck them. Can you actually imagine having to console someone into being set for life?

NTA. But Sam clearly doesn't want to lie anymore. If it's important to him, let him know you have his back either way.

NTA but Sam clearly need a friend and while he knows op is pragmatic and told him the logical thing to do, I'd reach out to him and make very sure he understands that op will be there for him no matter what decision they make and to offer to come up with a plan so that in the near future if he decides to come out, at least he has a little bit of money saved to get a place to live and isn't completly on the streets

it is so much better to lose your living arrangement with 2.5 million dollars than without them, as a member of lgbt myself i genuinely do not get people's want to come out when they know their live will become a living hell if they do

Definitely that those hateful people aren’t worthy of honesty. Haters gonna hate, but haters gonna get lied to because people don’t want to deal with their hate. Sam could transition without worrying about the cost, which many trans folk could only dream of. He just needs to be patient (which is easier said than done when you know you are living a full blown lie), but that 2.5 mil is really going to cushion the blow when his awful family disowns him. I can’t imagine what his life must be like living that lie and having to listen to how much his parents are disgusted by “people like her” - as I believe they would put it. Maybe he should just try to move out and come up with excuses to distance himself from his family. This could make things bearable until he gets his inheritance.

From what he’s told us, he has said that he is a very pragmatic person and that his friend knows it so asking a pragmatic person if they should do that and then lose £1 million is dumb

The sad truth is there is a lot of queer.folk who think they would be the exception to their families hate. They never are. You have to be fully aware and accepting the outcome of coming out to family who do not support the lgbtqia+ because they will never accept you in the way that you want to be accepted. By the time they decide to actually change their opinions, it may not be for several decades to almost a lifetime, when there's no more time left.

I have heard the story before and I’m pretty sure there is a follow up. Now, I’m not saying what I remember is accurate but what I do remember is that Sam comes out to his family, family doesn’t take it well and he gets disowned and booted just like OP said, Sam, then bitches op for not supporting them (for being right and what they said to Sam) and looks even worse for it.

Ngl it just sounded like he wanted to vent. I feel like those who grew up in hateful families have a tendency to actually want to come out as they had been indirectly rejected their whole lives. I am a queer person but while my family is not the most accepting and as of now I am not thinking of coming out any time soon, I am honestly happy with my identity and I was never taught to be hateful or fearful of the LGBTQ+ community so I have that part of me that never felt trapped or needing to prove a right to my existence. I am honestly perplexed by people who want to come out to knowingly homophobic people and not hide it from them but that’s bc I never felt a need to prove a right to my existence. I think it’s likely a bit different for transgender people but I feel like it’s likely similar, he wants to prove a right to exist and that is blinding him from the money. I don’t think OP is wrong but he definitely should have listened more and be a shoulder to cry on before telling his opinion as it was clear at that moment that his friend just wanted to talk to someone than ask for advice.

Sam is probably burn out of living in the closet, but as a trans person I believe coming out would be an IDIOTIC choice 😭 not even because of the money, but Sam's has no support system, no work, is in college and debt. Coming out would wipe everything he has, and the worst part is that he probably wouldn’t be able to transition even after coming out because HRT requires a lot of medical procedures that become expensive too.
