Developed in response to lessons learned from peacekeeping and counter-insurgency operations in the Balkans and Iraq, it was engineered specifically for asymmetric warfare in dense urban environments. Although often linked to the 2A5 chassis, the project incorporated design elements from both the 2A5 and 2A6 variants while shifting focus toward close-quarters urban survival. Key Modifications & Features * All-Round Armor Package: Features composite modular armor blocks along the sides of the hull and turret to defeat RPGs and shaped-charge warheads from high off-axis angles. It also includes reinforced belly armor to protect the crew against anti-tank mines and IEDs. * Armament: Retains the 120 mm Rh-120 L/44 smoothbore gun. The shorter L/44 barrel was intentionally retained over the longer L/55 (found on the 2A6) to allow better maneuverability through narrow city streets and building clearings. * Remote Weapon Station (RWS): Fitted with a top-mounted, fully stabilized RWS armed with either a .50 caliber (12.7 mm) heavy machine gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher, enabling the commander to engage targets on elevated upper floors without exposing themselves. * Obstacle Clearance: Equipped with a front-mounted hydraulic dozer blade used to clear barricades, debris, and road blocks. * Situational Awareness: Integrates close-range video surveillance cameras around the perimeter to eliminate close-range blind spots for the crew. * Auxiliary Power & Non-Lethal Tools: Features an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) to run sensors and electronics while the main engine is off, as well as high-intensity searchlights and a public address system for crowd control.
