A lot of people don’t realize that they are two teenagers who are trying to navigate something serious and mature like maintaining a relationship. Romance is something that teenagers are sparkly about at first to the point that they revolve around each other’s lives. But, partnership isn’t only about being with each other, and Nick and Charlie faced this kind of challenge in their relationship. I think the movie reflects a perfect representation of a realistic codependent teenage relationship — which can be very stressful to navigate as teens. Their temporary separation is surprisingly beneficial for the both of them to learn that they’re not going to be Nick and Charlie all the time. I can feel the exhaustion from Nick because he had the obligation to manage Charlie. But, I’m glad they’ve talked through it in the end where they set clear boundaries for when they’re going to see each other while living their own lives.
