@holvek: A space elevator is a hypothetical structure that could transport people and cargo from Earth into space without using conventional rockets. The idea is to attach an extremely strong cable near the equator and extend it through geostationary orbit, about 35,786 km above Earth, continuing even farther with a counterweight at the end. Because of Earth’s rotation, the cable would remain under tension, while special climbers could move up and down it. The main problem is the material: existing materials are not strong enough to build such a huge cable. Scientists have considered carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other extremely strong materials, but creating a real cable tens of thousands of kilometres long is currently beyond our technology. If a space elevator could be built, sending cargo into orbit would become much cheaper and easier, potentially allowing people and materials to be transported into space regularly. Interestingly, a space elevator on Mars or the Moon would theoretically be much easier to build because their gravity is weaker.
