@pilot.avabelle: 2 things to clarify. 1st, even when you prioritize family you can still make A LOT of money. You just might not be picking up extra trips and chasing upgrades & wide body flying. By delaying those 2 things usually you’ll get better seniority because captain and/or widebody are going to be the careers “highest levels” so everyone will stay until they retire. Vs if you upgrade later you have more seniority movement in FO slot giving you a closer schedule to what you want & better quality of life. Arguable with higher seniority you might be able to play your cards right to make more money as a super senior FO by adjusting your schedule more, hanging out on reserve and not being called etc. at the end of the day, there’s a lot of flexibility in this career, and a lot of workarounds to prioritize what you want and if that’s family the best part about this job is you don’t bring Work home So you get to give them your full attention and be present when you are #pilot #airlinepilot #pilotlife #studentpilot #flighttraining
this thought sits on my brain 24/7 and your video just helped me more than you know 🫶🏽

Do female flight attendants get asked this same question? Pilots have better pay, QOL, benefits, time off, etc so are we asking all women in the aviation industry this question or only the ones who have high paying jobs that hold male dominated positions??

When I was in lawschool, as a single mom, people used to say "who is going to watch your kids"....probably the same person who would have watched them if I worked a minimum wage job!
Kids grow up.
Now my kids really enjoy that I make enough money to help them achieve their goals...especially my son who is working to become an airline pilot!

That’s beautiful. My father chose the money and as much as I appreciate the life he gave us, it has created phycological issues for myself and my mother. It wasn’t till I was grown and working for him that I realized to let go of my own issues. I’m glad you are wise and understand these monumental moments. You go girl!!!

What I like about the airlines is flexibility. I try to keep my seniority where I hold days off wherever I want as well as work the overtime whenever I want. I always tell new and young up and coming pilots u want to be top 10% in whatever aircraft and seat (CA versus FO). Always go with that mindset.

Makes me happy to hear this bc I wonder how my kids will feel with him being gone being a bunch during the month. Thankfully he prioritizes being home as much as possible

It’s amazing how the vast majority of future mothers’ perspectives change once they actually become a mother……inside or outside of aviation. Generally, not the same for fathers if they are able to allow their spouse to be with the children all the time. I’ve employed about 2,000 pilots…..usually about 900 at a time. I’d say 75% eventually left for an internal or external role that allowed them to be home every night. That same number for men was closer to 5%. It’s always good to have a backup plan in case your perspectives change. My own daughter is a nurse having her first in two months and plans to continue working 12 hour shifts after the arrival. These are things that are best figured out once they happen….I have only been encouraging. I would do the same if she were a pilot. My youngest son just turned 22 and got his restricted ATP. (With 500 hours of muti engine turbine time….yes, proud dad). I’ve been suggesting to him for five years to prepare for long periods away from his future wife and kids. Finally, I think your posts are very genuine and helpful to future pilots.
