Whether caravans departing from Dunhuang for the West took the northern or the southern route, they had to pass through Merv in "Little Parthia" to enter Parthian territory, and then proceed via Ctesiphon, Seleucia, and Antioch before turning toward Syria. On the sea route, ships from India via the Persian Gulf to Antioch also had to pass through ports controlled by Parthia. Chinese historical records state that when Zhang Qian's deputy envoy reached Parthia, the Parthian king sent 20,000 cavalry to the eastern border to welcome them. When Gan Ying arrived at Antioch and stood by the great sea, intending to cross, the boatmen at Parthia's western frontier deliberately exaggerated the perils of navigation—"the sea is vast; those who sail with favorable winds take three months to cross, but if they encounter sluggish winds, it may take two years"—and so Gan Ying stopped. When the Han envoys returned home, Parthia sent envoys to accompany them, and from then on "Parthia and Han exchanged envoys and trade, with an unbroken flow." Chinese silk and ironware were sold through Parthia to West Asia and Rome, while exotic goods from the Western Regions also entered China via Parthia—Parthia reaped enormous monopoly profits from transit taxes and resale. Parthia deliberately blocked direct contact in order to preserve the exorbitant profits from the resale of "Han silk fabrics"; it bought silk from Han and sold it to Rome at high prices, with profit margins reaching 300% to 1000%. 💡 Parthia's calculations were not just about money: it had been in a long‑term state of war with Rome (e.g., the Battle of Carrhae). If Han and Rome had directly allied, Parthia would have faced a pincer attack from both east and west. Blocking direct passage was thus both an economic interest and a survival strategy. In AD 166, envoys of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius arrived at Luoyang via the sea route through Rinan commandery—"and thus for the first time they made contact." This was the first formal direct interaction between the two great empires, bypassing Parthia's land blockade. The Roman historian Florus, in his Epitome of Roman History, records that during the reign of Augustus (from 27 BC onward), "Seres" came bearing gems, pearls, and elephants, claiming that they had taken four years to reach him.
