I like this concept. My current DM takes anatomy to mind in fights. We were fighting a dragon and my character was holding his mouth open with a grapple for a turn, tanked a breath attack, circle back to me and I said "Im gonna stab up its head from inside the mouth" I prep the roll to hit and DM just looked at me wide eyed like "Do you know what's up from where you stabbed? It's brain. You just killed it."

I've always allowed "called shots". even if that is a decapitate shot. if they roll and succeed, than they do.

the way ive been doing it is if someone hits a nat 20 they hit a vital part of the creatures body, like eyes, limbs, or wings, which reduces the creature abilities to fight

There's two different things here imo. 1- Dealing massive damage to a creature like half of their HP, I wouldn't necessarily unalive the creature instead roll to see if you chop of a limb. 2 - When dealing massive damage to a creature if the HP to put him under is 10 or so points just give the player the win, it'll make for a much more satisfying end.

the main reason that was pulled off was the ranger and rouge who at level 2 could land a hit for over 100 damage depending on their set up. so unless ur fighting dragons off the bat they would one tap everything. hints why it was removed. now u could do something along the lines of if u can deal half+ damage roll a con save. if he saves it he keeps going and if he fails hes stunned for a turn allowing the next one to attack to finish it off. but ya that got removed for a reason.

I crit a fire spell and rolled almost max damage just for my dm to sit there and say "the guy stumbles back and looks like hes about to fall over, but hes still on his feet". sir I just engulfed this man in enough fire to char him and your telling me he made it out of that ALIVE?!?? rull of cool and massive damage are great tools to help your players not feel like every hit is just another swing, but that strong enough hits axtually matter 🥰🥰🥰

Nah. I use a legendary action to gain its HP back plus half temp health. Teach them a lesson for breaking the game.

System Shock roll... we sometimes use it. we are playing a Ad&D2nd and a pathfinder campaign at the moment. so it comes up often for us.

yes, but even better, before the campaign let the players know that there is modular damage and no HP, every mob or player may be seriously maimed or even killed with one lucky strike... and then watch them adapt, after first tavern brawl that decimates them way more than it should normally, they become gorrillas, use gorrila warfare, traps, explosives, ambushes

I’m going to be honest, I don’t track HP. I just wait until it feels right. 🤷

one time my character got a mace of disruption right before a fight with a bunch of devils, which has this effect on creatures of that type. i strolled in, top of the initiative, natural 20, huge damage on this guy taking him to less than half of his health, he failed the con save and was immediately disintegrated as the first beat of the fight. it was the most awesome thing to happen in the whole campaign.

a good DM would just describe how heavily injured the monster is. A big hit takes off an arm or leg and handicap the monster etc

If the attack kills them at half health then what's the point of having a lot of hp?

Let the massive damage kill monsters but not bosses, if your players get used to their big hits insta killing their enemies it’ll really set the tone when they don’t kill the war Cheif they have been hunting

i do something similar. instead of it being half of their total hitpoints in a single hit, its if they do half of their current hp. if a boss has 100hp, and 3 party members each do 10hp damage, the "massive damage" theshold would be 35hp (half of the remaining 70 hp) the 4th party member has to do 35 or more damage to trigger the cons roll. if the boss wins the roll, they take 50% of their remaining hp, plus an additional 2.5x whatever the d20 roll% was. so the boss rolls an 11, they take 77.5% of their remaining health as damage. if the boss rolls a nat 20, they are reduced to 1hp and given a counterattack to the blow. if the boss rolls a 10 or less, they are instantly killed.
