@moments.in.time0: POV: A Night Out in 1927 New York Could Get You Arrested In 1927, buying alcohol in New York City is a federal crime. You are standing on a rain soaked street in Lower Manhattan. You approach a completely ordinary looking service door. The doorman asks who sent you before letting you slip quietly down the stairs into a hidden basement club. Inside, the atmosphere is electric and expensive. A live jazz band plays in the corner while wealthy patrons sit at small tables paying absolute fortunes for unlabelled bottles of liquor. You step up to the walnut bar and order a drink, keeping your glass below the rail just in case. Suddenly, a patron at the next table leans over and whispers that the police are asking questions two blocks away. Nobody panics. The music simply softens. The guests quietly grab their overcoats and file out through a hidden service corridor. By the time the sun comes up, the party has completely vanished back into the shadows of the waking city. Would you risk a police raid for a night out in the Roaring Twenties? #POV #1920s #Prohibition #NewYorkHistory #Speakeasy
