@drbeckyatgoodinside: If back to school is stirring up big feelings, in your kid and in you, you are not alone. New teacher. New routine. New everything. Of course this feels like a lot. And underneath all of it, your kid is looking right at you to figure out how worried, or anxious, or excited they should be. I used to think my job in these moments was having the right facts ready or the perfect explanation. What actually helped my own kids more was something simpler: staying calm near them and letting them borrow that calm for themselves. There's nothing wrong with your kid for needing that. And there's nothing wrong with you if you don't always feel calm enough to give it. You just need the right words for the right moment, and that's exactly what I made this video for. Three moments matter most this week: before you leave the house, at drop off, and at pickup. And if you want more advice from me on what to say beyond the first day of school including those inevitable rough mornings and the homework battles, my brand new Back-to-School program walks you through it. Register now and you'll also get into our live workshop with me on August 19, plus the replay. Link in bio.

My daughter jumps out as the car is still moving. How about a video for independent kids who still need love and encouragement

If I don’t ask my questions right after school, my kids will claim they can’t remember their day later on.

I m having difficulties with telling young children in advance that they will have an amazing year at school. Maybe our assumption does not align with their lived experience. And in that case they might start doubting themselves. From an interaction-based perspective, I m urging parents to focus on what they know best (their kids and what they can do, what they are good at, where they struggle, etc.) instead of rushing to reassure them of something they do not really know, have and have no control over.
